Halotherapy is a form of alternative medicine which makes use of salt's ability to absorb moisture. "Wet salt therapy" has been used since the beginning of time through Nettie pots, saline solutions, salt baths and more. Due to technological innovation in this modern day society, Dry Salt/HaloTherapy was discovered.
Salt has been around since the beginning of time and has been used throughout history in all sorts of ways. Salt is one of the essential ingredients that constitute life.
It has also been utilized in various therapeutic, healing and medicinal ways including saline solutions, nebulizers, skin scrubs, salt baths, Nettie pots, etc...mostly known as "wet" salt therapy.
In our modern society, thanks to technological innovations, another aspect of salt therapy has emerged where the main health benefit comes from the salt's quality to absorb moisture. It is called Dry Salt Therapy and is also known as “Halotherapy”.
In the early1800’s, in salt caves and mines throughout Eastern Europe and Russia, it was noticed that workers in the mines and caves did not suffer from respiratory ailments like others who were not working in the caves. Although it had been thought that working in underground mines and caves were a danger to one's life and health, the salt mine workers tended to be much younger looking and healthier overall.
Dr. Feliks Boczkowski founded the first salt therapy treatment in 1839 at a resort facility at the Wielicaka Salt Mine in Poland bringing particular attention to the fact that staying in the underground salt caves was an extremely effective asthma treatment.
During WWII, it was discovered that people who had been hiding out in the underground salt caves were experiencing improved respiratory and overall health as well.
In the 1960's underground spa facilities gained popularity and attention for people with respiratory ailments who then also noticed improved overall health and younger looking skin with regular treatments.
In 1985, the first ever Halogenerator was built and Dry Salt Therapy or "Halotherapy" was born. (So was our studio founder and owner, Lauren Dorsey. Talk about synchronicity and alignment!)
Dry Salth Therapy was first practiced in Europe and USSR. It was not until later that it moved into Canada, then Australia.. and finally in 2011, to the United States.
Today, Halotherapy is being provided throughout Europe, Australia, United Kingdom, Canada, the United States and other areas as an all natural, alternative and complimentary way of improving general wellness, respiratory issues, skin conditions, detoxification, mental wellness, mindfulness, athletic performance and so much more.
Halotherapy is also known as a “toothbrush for the respiratory system”. The negatively charged salt particles from halotherapy are highly attracted to the slightly positive charge found on the inner surfaces of our respiratory airways. THIS is what makes salt therapy so effective. Essentially “scrubbing” or clearing the airways. When you have healthy, clean lungs, breathing becomes more natural and easy.
Our breath is our life force. Easily flowing breath, creates ease and flow in our energy field.
The lungs and respiratory system are just one of many ways Salt Therapy is beneficial to our wellness. Read on for more!
There are two main types of salt therapy: PASSIVE and ACTIVE.
PASSIVE salt therapy is an indirect method (salt lamps, for example) that can help neutralize the energy frequency in a small space or room.
However, ACTIVE is the only direct dry salt therapy method that enters the respiratory system and/or is absorbed through the skin for deeper therapeutic benefits in the mind and body.
As the salt travels into the salt room, these salt particles of dry sodium chloride are inhaled into the respiratory system. The dry salt naturally starts absorbing allergens, toxins and foreign substances in your lungs and throughout your respiratory tract.
Dry salt may help to reduce inflammation and open airway passages as well. The micro-sized crystal structure of pure NaCl particles breaks loose and clears out all of the ‘bad stuff’. This is the basis for how dry salt therapy can impact people suffering from respiratory conditions like allergies, asthma, bronchitis, cystic fibrosis, COPD and many others.
The properties of dry salt also absorb impurities and provide anti-bacterial properties that benefit the skin such as acne, psoriasis and eczema as well as regulates the skin's micro-circulation. The smaller particles can reach beneath the skin’s surface and absorb moisture towards the skin. The larger salt particles land on the skin and absorb any bacterial and foreign substances. The dry salt accelerates cell rejuvenation and improves skin rigidity. Think: "just walked out of a luxurious spa facial" type of glow!
